1/28 - 2/3/2013

Monday:  0.  Whipped from waking early to finish my grading.

Tuesday:  2 miles w/Jimmy on the HRT.  I wanted to go farther, but I had to score the girls' home game at 5.

Wednesday:  3 on RT w/Jimmy.  We had a 2hr delay so I got out early.

Thursday:  3 up Daniel's Mtn. w/Jimmy.  Trails were 85% clear.  I forgot how ridiculously tough this run is.  Nice windy view at the top.

Friday:  0.  Lifted in the early am before school.  Upperx2.  I had to score the boys' bball games.  I could have squeezed a short run in between school and the games, but I was feeling lazy.

Saturday:  1 mile RT w/ Jimmy.  I was feeling pumped for this run.  The trails were clear. I felt great EXCEPT my darn right achilles was bothering me the entire way.  I decided to walk it back after the mile mark. I felt it a little on Friday going up stairs.  I'm a little bummed.  I need to get in the weight room more, so my form is better.  I really think it might be bugging me from all the slipping on snow and possibly my new shoes.  Rocky said it best when asked if he was mad...

Late morning - lifted upper x2

You won't find that in any of the Hollywood Rocky movies.  It's in an HB production from the late 80's.

Night:  I rolled down to Boston and the Reggie Lewis Center with Greg, Coach Mangean, and 4 of my senior athletes to watch the New Balance Indoor Grand Prix.  What a blast.  The meet was very spectator friendly.  The events were run right on schedule, they handed out thunder sticks, and the races  were exciting.  We got to cheer on Chariho's Bryce Kelly in the boys' mile and talk with Coach Hab.  We saw Galen Rupp, Tirunesh Diababa, and other top pros.  We also saw high school phenom Mary Cain run into the record books in the elite 2 mile.  It was a raucous good time!  I'm excited to watch it on ESPN2 today.

Sunday:  Will the achilles be ready to roll tomorrow?  No

Belleville Pond 10k Trail Race

Photo credit:  Ellen Galoob (age 8)

I headed down with Greg on Saturday to my parents' house in Charlestown.  Jonny came over at night and we talked about his upcoming race.  I decided I would give it a whirl.  I had to grade some midterms on Sunday night, so the plan was to not kill myself in order to save a little energy for grading.  The best laid plans of mice and men often go awry!

We arrived with plenty of time to register and enjoy pre-race chatter.  Mother Nature kept chatting to a minimum.  The temp was in the high teens and warming to the low 20's by race time, but there was a brutal wind which made the conditions much less comfortable.

The gun went off and I tried to stick to my plan of not overextending myself early.  After the first view of the pond I began to pick it up.  After about 5 minutes I realized that I was working pretty hard already.  I heated up and proceeded to work on the zipper on my top.  It wouldn't unzip.  I patiently tried to wiggle it down for the next minute or so while trying not too panic.  I wasn't that hot... yet! I kept working on it while steadily heating up.  Finally,  I took off my gloves and ripped it in a slight state of claustrophobia/fear of death by heat exhaustion.

I felt a little relief and kept working through mile 2 which was somewhere near the powerlines.  It was nice of Mike to put out mile markers.  I hit the second mile right at 16 minutes.  I immediately figured I would be around 50 minutes if I could sustain my pace.  The third mile was tough.  It had a lot of little, steep climbs on beautiful single track.  I was in full race mode as I passed a few runners and got passed by a couple others.  I was relieved to see Greg because I knew he would be at the approximate half way point.

Mile 4 was a grind.  I definitely worked harder than I intended on the 3rd mile and I was really feeling it now.  Mile 4 was more hilly single track, but thankfully it seemed to be less sun exposed.  My sleeves were rolled up, my ear flaps were up on my hat, my sunglasses were fogging, and I was considering ditching my gloves.  Somehow I was still managing to pass some runners.  I followed a fellow racer for at least a half a mile before I passed Matthew Walker.  He pulled right over for us to pass.  The racer I was closely trailing asked if he was alright and he seemed ok - just tired.  I could relate!

Right before the long straight section near mile 5, I heard the pitter patter of light, quick foot strikes.  A speedy 12 year old girl glided past me.  She would be the only runner to pass me from the 3 mile point on.  She kept motoring and ended up finishing four places ahead of me.

Once I saw the five mile marker I began to grind.  My form felt pretty good (nice quick cadence) and I was able to pass another runner right after the crazy bridge over the pond.  I had one more guy in my sights, but I ran out of real estate.  I mustered a kick and brought it home in 51:49 for 45th place.  I had clearly worked harder than I originally planned as evidence by my slower pace in the middle miles of the course.  I slapped some high fives, grabbed a water, then jumped in Greg's truck to make his meet in Providence.

I thoroughly enjoyed this course.  The snow was fun.  It was really well marked.  The weather wasn't that bad.  And I felt decent out there.  I was pretty zonked while cheering for Greg's WR (check his blog it's the Pisgahtwin link).  Thanks to Mike Galoob for putting on such a fun event.  I had no intentions of doing this race, but I'm really glad I did.

1/21 - 1/27/2013

Monday:  3 on RT w/Jimmy.  I ran early from the 63 South parking area.  Yesterday I was overdressed, so I made up for it today by underdressing.  It was 20 degrees and I was cold.  I'm not sure I could have gone longer if I wanted to.  I'm a little worn out from watching the Pats lose last night.

Tuesday:  0.  I had to work the score books for the girls' bball game.  JV lost in an overtime thriller; the varsity won.

Wednesday:  2 on Oxbow Rd w/Jimmy.  I bundled up for this one.  I couldn't get out to the rail trail because of a meeting after work.  This was the coldest weather I've run in, in a  while.  I think it was 7 or 8 degrees when I got out.

Thursday:  5.  3.5 w/Cody at night.  Prospect/Stage lollipop from the boat landing.  When I got home I ran w/Jimmy for another 1.5.  Tonight was a little warmer than last night.  Felt decent.  I have to score bball games tomorrow.  It would be great to get 3 miles in before hand.  I did a decent routine of push-ups and crunches in the am.  I won't be eclipsing Boj's weekly totals though!

Friday:  0.  I had to score the boys' jv and varsity games.

Saturday:  am:  I hiked 7 miles w/students in Pisgah.  Beautiful. sunny and clear weather.  10 - 17 degrees.  We hiked Kilburn, Ridge, Baker, and Davis.  We went to Bossman Vista which was beautiful, but the coolest part was walking out to the island on Baker Pond.  Out in the middle of the pond were tons of coyote tracks.  They must like meeting out in the open area at night. You could see where they greeted each other  by these circular imprints on the snow.

pm:  Beat from my hike (why is hiking more tiring than running?), but I knew Jimmy would hate me if I didn't get out for something on such a nice day.  We ran 2.5 on the roads.

I feel like I got some much needed vitamin D today!

Sunday:  8.  Belleville Pond 10k in Rhody.  Short warm-up and short cool down at Indoor Meet in Providence.  Fun race.  I think I'll do a separate write up for the race.

1/14 - 1/20/2013

Monday:  3.5 on RT w/Jimmy.  Felt stiff today probably from pushing hard yesterday w/Cody then not stretching apres run.  I stretched good today and foam rolled my back.  I need to lift!

Tuesday:  0.  I had to score two bball games.  We lost both but fought valiantly.  Tomorrow will be tough to get out the door.  I have open house at 6 pm plus a meeting until 3:30 after school.  Early release on Friday and a 3 day weekend should make amends.

Wednesday:  3.5 on RT w/Jimmy.  Nice fresh snow, and I wasn't even bitter that we were the only school in NH without a delay or a cancellation!

Thursday:  0.  Renaissance Night at school.  It was fun watching our kids in their element.

Friday:  2 w/Jimmy on RT.  Not much time again today as I have to go back to school to score bball games.  Brrrrrrrr!  It was cold out there.  Did 40 push-ups am.

Saturday:  Lifted upperx2 + shot some hoops in the early am.  Mid am - ran 6 w/Jimmy up Reservoir Rd.  Beautiful day.  I might get out again.  I thought Reservoir Rd was tough without snow, with snow it's a real taint kicker.

Sunday:  8 in Pisgah w/Jimmy.  We ran down Old Chesterfield Rd from Horseshoe Parking area chasing the elusive Griffin and Jenny.  Once we caught them (32:30) we turned back.  I ran way too fast in the beginning which made the second half a sufferfest.  I overdressed like an idiot adding to the misery of the up mountain finish.  My feet killed from slipping on the snow.  Basically, it was one of the least enjoyable runs I've done in a while.  I comforted myself with some Taco Bell on the drive home.

1/7 - 1/13/2013

Monday:   0.  I worked the books for the jv and varsity boys' basketball game.  I'm getting a cold.

Tuesday 3 miles w/Jimmy on Rail Trail.  Cold is a sh*t eater.  I'm glad I got out.  My back was pretty tight.

Wednesday:  Sh*t eater and chores 1, running zero.

Thursday:  2 miles w/Jimmy on Rail Trail.  I didn't have time for much more.  Felt decent.  My cold is still going full force.  I need to lift!

Friday:  0.

Saturday:  3 w/ Jimmy RT.  Good pace.  Cold still lingering.  Lifted upperx2.  Foam rolled back at night which has been quite tight.  Fun dinner with Mom, Pard, Jenny, and Greg for an early bday celebration for Gina.

Sunday:  4 w/Cody and Jimmy Reservoir Rd.  Cody and I had scheduled an epic long run, but I'm still recovering from my cold and he sounded like he has walking pneumonia.  We made it a short one.  Pretty low mileage week, but I'm happy I was able to get out there 4 times despite my cold.
